the portrait that started it all
Michael Martinez, Age 1
In honor of my birthday, I'm inviting families to create portraits that will become tomorrow's heirlooms while helping sponsor a child's education.
An August Legacy Portrait Promotion
Celebrate August by Creating a Legacy and Changing a Child's Future
I love telling the story of my one-year birthday portrait. My mother’s determination to preserve this milestone for me and my brothers has inspired me for as long as I can remember. She was a young country mom navigating downtown Houston when she commissioned this portrait. Since she and my father shared one car and he was at work most days, she boarded a city bus with one-year-old me in tow. She took me to a portrait studio and made sure the appointment was on my actual birthday because that detail mattered to her.
I’m sure she never knew—or could have imagined—how much that simple act of love would mean to me decades later or how profoundly it would shape my sense of self throughout my life. I’m grateful she made the investment and that the portrait was created with such lasting quality, especially since so many photographs from that era have faded with time. Looking at it today, I’m reminded not only of what I looked like as a child, but of how deeply I have always been loved. Even if purchasing that portrait stretched her comfort financially, I know it was money well spent. The reminder it gives us both every single day is priceless. That is the gift I hope to give to other families.
As I grew older, I was given another extraordinary gift—the opportunity to attend a private school. The nuns who taught me shaped my character, grounded my values, and influenced the person I would become in ways I can never fully express. Because of the foundation they gave me, I feel called to give back by helping provide a private school education for families in need through this promotion.
I believe deeply in the gift of portraiture and the legacy it creates. Through this promotion, I am inviting clients to preserve their own family's story while helping us fund one student scholarship at my elementary school for the upcoming school year. To make that possible, our goal is to raise $6,000.
I hope you will join us in supporting this effort. It is more than a promotion—it is the fulfillment of a dream that has been on my heart for many years.
